The Challenge
Access to accurate patent and licensing information for medicines is a critical factor in global health, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Yet, the data is often fragmented, outdated, or difficult to interpret. MedsPal aimed to solve this by centralizing medicine data into one accessible platform, empowering decision-makers to improve affordability and access.
The challenge was twofold: first, to build a platform that could consolidate and standardize complex global datasets, and second, to present this data in a way that was clear, trustworthy, and actionable for a wide variety of stakeholders—from researchers to policymakers.

Our Approach
We partnered with MedsPal to design a platform that transformed raw data into usable insights. Our UX Research process identified how different user groups searched for and applied data, which informed the design of intuitive search and filtering systems.
In the redesign we did throughout the year, we made the data table more visually appealing by adding some whitespace around the cells and tags for key information. We also added a saved search feature to allow users to easily return to their previous searches, as they mentioned they frequently check back for updates on their queries. Users were confused by the data visualizations and said they were unclear. So, we had to go back to the interviews and review what our users told us to come up with some new data visualizations that the client hadn’t considered before. We created a complex donut chart that showed a breakdown of patent information by region and added a timeline to give users a snapshot of a medication’s patent history over time. This made it much easier for users to understand the data, rather than having to dig through CSV files and use Excel to parse it themselves. The resulting report was more useful and relevant to the data on the back end.

The Impact
MedsPal launched as a vital tool for global health stakeholders. It immediately improved transparency and efficiency in understanding medicine patents, helping drive policy decisions and negotiations for affordable treatments.
The platform’s success was reflected in both adoption and feedback: governments and NGOs reported improved access to critical data, while researchers appreciated the platform’s usability and clarity. They brought in tens of thousands of national patent applications supporting over 130 middle to low-income countries worldwide. MedsPal became a cornerstone resource for global medicine access efforts.
