
Redefining the Dating Experience With UX-First Design.
BYOU is a dating app focused on creating authentic connections. Unlike swipe-heavy platforms, BYOU set out to prioritize usability and meaningful interaction. To achieve this, they partnered with Goji Labs for a complete UX overhaul aimed at driving adoption and long-term engagement.

The Challenge
The dating app market is saturated, and users are quick to abandon platforms that feel confusing, clunky, or inauthentic. BYOU had a unique vision for the space but struggled with a user experience that didn’t match their mission. Engagement was dropping, and without an improved design, the product risked losing traction.
The challenge was to create an intuitive, user-first experience that made it easy to connect with others while supporting BYOU’s mission of authenticity.

Our Approach
We conducted in-depth UX Research to understand user behavior and uncover where pain points existed. From there, we redesigned the app’s flow, architecture, and visual system to make the experience seamless and engaging.
We kicked off the project with a competitive analysis of the major dating platforms — including Tinder, Bumble and Hinge — to uncover the underlying user flows, pain points and disengagement triggers that often arise when users feel overwhelmed. From there, we mapped specialized user journeys that prioritized meaningful, real-life connection over volume and swiping fatigue. We translated those journeys into the app’s flow, wireframes and high-fidelity design, focusing on intuitive interaction, safety features (such as proximity constraints and “safe perimeter” zones) and a visual language that deviates from the norms of the dating-app space. Our design system leveraged a sleek dark mode palette (elegant black with blue/purple highlights) and warm rounded edges to create an interface both modern and inviting while reinforcing trust and sophistication.


The Impact
With the newly designed BYOU platform, we enabled users to shift from passive swiping to authentic engagement, encouraging more thoughtful profile review, conversation initiation and real-world meet-ups. Thanks to the redesigned flows, the app positioned itself as a differentiated solution in a crowded marketplace, emphasizing quality over quantity. The included safety and proximity-based features helped build confidence and reduce user anxiety about meeting in person. While specific numeric metrics weren’t disclosed, the launch clearly allowed BYOU to carve out a distinct identity and value proposition, a real differentiator among mass-market alternatives. The result: a product experience aligned to user intent, stronger brand positioning, and a foundation for sustained user engagement and growth.
