
Revolutionizing the Actor Training Experience Through an Intuitive Mobile App.
Castability is a performance training platform that helps actors improve their craft through scene submissions evaluated by professional casting directors. Serving aspiring and working actors, the tool enables structured practice, personalized feedback, and performance tracking across genres and character types. To evolve into a modern training ecosystem, Castability needed a complete product and UX overhaul that matched the ambition of its educational mission.

The Challenge
Castability’s existing app offered the core functionality—recording scenes, submitting performances, and receiving director feedback—but the experience was unintuitive, overwhelming, and visually outdated. Actors faced friction from the moment they onboarded: dense text blocks, unclear navigation, small fonts, and poor contrast made it difficult to understand how to practice, film, and submit scenes. Technical limitations also hindered the submission flow, especially around syncing scripts with live audio cues, creating frustration in the app’s most critical feature.
As the platform grew, structural issues became more pronounced. The information architecture was cluttered with 20+ genre labels and confusing categories such as genre labels and character archetypes that made exploring scenes difficult. Feedback reports were only delivered via email, forcing users to leave the app to receive the core values they paid for. The emailed reports were also visually overwhelming and looked more like a spreadsheet than an easy to digest infographic. Meanwhile, browsing top actor submissions a feature meant to inspire and educate, was hindered by lack of a dedicated viewing experience for submission videos. Castability needed more than interface improvements; they needed a modernized product framework that clarified their offering, strengthened learning outcomes, and made the experience feel genuinely supportive, professional, and enjoyable.

Our Approach
We began with an in-depth discovery phase, running a full Product Strategy Sprint to define user needs, identify friction points, and align Castability’s vision with a scalable product roadmap. Through a UX audit, competitor analysis, empathy mapping, and end-to-end journey modeling, we pinpointed structural issues across onboarding, scene browsing, submission flows, and evaluated the casting director experience. This gave us the foundation to streamline UX models, clarify the actor and director workflows, and modernize the entire end-to-end experience.
Through a new gamification feature in order to increase in app engagement with positive feedback loops we created a daily point system. This allows users to earn achievements, complete daily practice challenges and access a rewards marketplace.
From there, we redesigned core interactions using patterns from our UI/UX Design practice. We introduced a guided onboarding experience that broke down complex steps into digestible moments, helping users understand how to practice, film, and submit with confidence. For scene submission—the heart of the product—we integrated a live teleprompter that shows scripts during filming with customizable speed controls, reducing cognitive load and eliminating timing errors. To unify scene feedback and reports with the rest of the experience, we built in-app performance reports with new simplified visualizations, trend charts, and personalized qualitative insights. Finally, we overhauled the Scene Gallery into a high-quality video player experience that supported learning through top-performing examples, improving inspiration and skill-building.


The Impact
The redesigned experience positions Castability as a modern, intuitive, and credibility-enhancing tool for aspiring actors. By simplifying onboarding, clarifying scene discovery, and enabling seamless filming and submission, the product significantly reduces friction at every step of the actor journey. The addition of in-app feedback transforms Castability from a submission tool into a continuous training platform, encouraging long-term skill development and retention.
Operationally, the new architecture supports gamification systems, achievement mechanics, enhanced scoring experiences for casting directors, and scalable content growth. The platform now has a cohesive visual identity, better-defined categorization logic, and a design foundation ready for engineering—strengthening Castability’s ability to attract schools, coaches, and broader professional networks. Although the redesigned app has not yet launched, it is set up for measurable improvements in engagement, learning outcomes, and conversion across both actors and evaluators.
